The Education team at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre also provide help, advice and support to local schools who are carrying out the Eco-Schools programme. Staff not only help teachers and pupils on the journey through applying for the Bronze and Silver awards, but also carry out practical work with Eco-Committees to develop their school grounds, target energy conservation, waste and water efficiency, all of which help the school gain the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag.
As well as helping schools obtain their Green Flags, several of the Education team are trained Eco-Schools Assessors. This involves visiting schools to assess whether they have fulfilled all the criteria to obtain a Green Flag. Amongst the schools visited and assessed in 2016/17 were Bush PS, Dungannon, Phoenix Integrated PS, Cookstown, St Jarlaiths PS, Blackwatertown and St Peters PS, Moortown, Downshire PS, St Colm’s High School, Draperstown and Birches PS.
